HELP ! I have a JD 4100 tractor with 160 hrs on it. Recently, it got jammed in gear and the dealer fixed it. However, I seem to remember that my brakes made little to no noise before. They did have to take part of the tractor apart to fix the tranny. (they took the left side apart and did not touch the right side. Not only did they tell me this but I can see the seal / gasket, new on the left & original on the right). When I got it back, the brakes made a loud metal-to-metal grinding noise. They also seemed to grab a little stronger and stop on a dime. I called. They said use it for an hour and call us back. Noise never really went away. The dealer came and brought it back to the shop. As they took it apart they expected to see something visible. NOTHING. Put it back together and it made the noise again ?????Took it apart again and this time checked to see if everything was in "spec". Perfect. It looks like I rarely, if ever, use the brakes. Very little wear. I have it back now. They are at all loss. They claim the brakes will make this type of noise, mine is just a bit louder. I thought this was strange as it was quiet before but they can find nothing wrong.??????Even stranger is that it makes the exact same noise on both sides (the side they worked and the side that they never touched.)HELP

George, The only thing that comes to mind is what kind of oil did they use to refill the transmission. The only acceptable oil is low viscosity hygard.
I would hope that the dealer used the proper oil, but you can't take anything for granted. ....

If I forget to release my brakes from the parking lock, I get something between a squeal and a squeak. What you describe sounds a bit like the brakes are dragging. You wouldn't think so since the dealer mechanics did the work. I guess things other than the brakes could make similar sounds, but again, you’d think that professional attention should identify such problems. However, you might note if there is the feeling of 'free-play' at the top of the brake pedal travel. You also might back off the brake adjustment to see if the sound goes away. I believe that tension should remain on the brake cable or linkage when an adjustment is made to increase the brake clearance. If the linkage goes slack, it might be an indication that the brakes are hung up. ....

George, that is the good part of these boards, being able to find other owners of like equipment to compare. Often we don't think of things or notice things until we have a change such as your service work. I do hope you here soon from some other owners of 4100 deere tractors. ....

George,

I also have a 4100 that, when new, the brakes sounded terrible, kinda like metal to metal, or dry, since I think they are oil bathed..... I've got about 60hrs on it now and they've quietened down alot. Come to think of it, I haven't noticed any noise at all lately... I also asked about it earlier and was told with continued use they would quit scraping/squealing.....

Not an answer, just my experience.....

Greg ....
